Winfred is an excellent yielding, high quality, drought tolerant, multiple grazing (up to 4 grazings) forage brassica. It is a cross between a turnip and kale. Winfred can provide an excellent source of energy and protein (approximately 22%). Winfred is highly palatable and digestible with its high leaf ratio. It is one of the most persistent forage brassicas available with its outstanding regrowth from frequent grazings. Winfred is frost tolerant and can keep growing in winter. It is suitable for a wide range of soil fertility and climates. It can be utilized as a pure stand or can be used in mixes. Winfred is an annual species. Plant Winfred starting in the spring for a stand that can produce and last through the following winter. In many climates it can be planted in the fall or winter to provide winter feed, but planting at these times will provide less grazings as prolonged chill will prompt Winfred to go into its reproductive cycle.
When you begin grazing Winfred, start when the crop is mature (10-12 weeks from planting -often indicated by a purple coloration of the leaf margins) and introduce it over time (2-3 hours per day for the first 7-10 days) to allow your stock to acclimate to the new feed source. Supplement with other feed sources with fiber. Your animals’ maximum intake portion of Winfred should be 33% for dairy, 70% for beef cattle, and up 100% for lambs. Always monitor animal health and ensure stock have ready access to drinking water at all times. Utilizing electric fencing for strip grazing will maximize intake and regrowth potential. Allow stock to all of the leaf and petiole and 1/3 of the stem to maximize liveweight gain.
