A cool season annual cereal grain.  UC142 is a new forage oat variety with better yeild and disease resistance than older varieties.  It has fine stems, slightly thinner than Montezuma Oats, withgood staw strenght to help reduce the likelyhood of lodging.  Time to panicle emergence is about two weeks later than that of Montezuma.  Makes good hay for horses and cattle with it fine stems and the grain yield also good, which is not common for forage oats.  Protien percentages are better than that observed for Montezuma.  UC142 has a prostrate growth habit initially, which is then followed by rapid heading and maturity.  UC142 oats stature is about belt high at maturity.  In mild climates -like most of California, they should be fall planted.  In colder areas UC142 Oats should be planted in the spring.
