Sunn Hemp is a warm season annual legume, originating from India. It’s known as "old legume" because it's been around for a long time. Sunn Hemp has had a new rise in popularity over the last few years due to its effectiveness as a soil building legume (adding nitrogen to the soil) cover crop.
As a cover crop, Sunn Hemp can produce large amounts of biomass quickly. It returns nutrients to the soil that have been depleted. In ideal growing conditions Sunn Hemp has the ability to produce up to 120 pounds of nitrogen per acre. In addition, it adds organic matter which can help to control nematodes and improve the overall soil quality. Sunn Hemp has the ability to suppress weeds up to 90 percent. Important to note, Sunn Hemp can start flowering as early as five to six weeks after planting.
Being highly palatable and chock-full of protein, Sunn Hemp is also a good choice for grazing and forage. Remember to graze or cut before it flowers. Sunn Hemp Seed should never be fed as grain, and animals should not graze plants that have mature or immature seeds on them. Ingesting the seeds at a high rate can cause damage to the liver, lungs, heart and nervous system. Did you know in some parts of the world Sunn Hemp can also be utilized as a non-wood fiber crop?
Note: Sunn Hemp is not related to Industrial Hemp or Cannabis.
