Safflower (Carthamus tinctorious): Is a highly branched, herbaceous, thistle-like annual, usually with many long sharp spines on the leaves. Safflower is mainly cultivated for its seed, which is used as edible oil and as birdseed. This type is a habitat variety, primarily for birdseed or to attract birds in a foodplot. The plant has a strong tap root which enables it to thrive in dry climates. Normally planted in the spring when soils are warmer and threat of frost is reduced. Plant at 20 to 25 lbs. per acre.
