Piper Sudangrass is a warm season annual that requires a frost-free growing season. It can be used for multi-cut green chop or hay, summer pasture, or as competitive cover crop. As a cover crop it is successful in providing large amounts of organic matter, and cycled nutrients. Other benefits include weed suppression, while loosening soil with its deep penetrating root system. Piper Sudan has finer stems than Sorghum-Sudan hybrid. Piper is characterized primarily by being more vigorous than commercial types, having a significantly lower level of hydrocyanic acid potential and by increased resistance to leaf blight and anthracnose.
Sudangrass should not be grazed before it reaches 18 inches high during or immediately after any severe stress. Wait to graze until regrowth is 12 to 18 inches high after cutting.
Mares with foals should not graze sudangrass, nor be fed greenchop or hay made from sudangrass.
