When used as a cover crop  Ida Gold Mustard can provide the following benefits.

Suppress Weeds– New seedlings have quick emergence and canopy, the cover crop battles weeds for nutrients, water, and sunlight as it grows.

Cycle Nutrients– Ida gold mustard takes up large amounts of nutrients which would otherwise be leached out; after incorporation these nutrients become available to the subsequent crop, which can reduce fertilization cost.

Erosion Control– Thick stands and extensive root structures provide excellent erosion control.

Reduce Compaction and Improve Water Penetration– Ida Gold mustard has deep tap roots that break up and loosen the soil, and improve water penetration and greatly reduce runoff compared to fallow ground.

Build Biomass-  A highly productive thick stand will provide substantial amounts of organic matter to your soil upon incorporation.

As Part of a Water Plan– The nutrient cycling and reduction of run-off are benefits that illustrate how these mustards can be a integral and part of a water quality plan.

Bio-fumigation Potential- Ida Gold Mustard and Pacific Gold Mustard have very high levels of glucosinolates. The interest in glucosinolates, which are allelochemicals that occur throughout the Brassica family, has been generated because of the possibility of using plant tissues as a substitute for or supplement to synthetic chemical pest controls. Glucosinolate degradation produces biologically active products, the most significant of which (for potential biofumigation) are isothiocyanates, which behave as general biocides and have broad-spectrum activity on soil microorganisms.  Some commercial soil fumigants use Methyl Isothiocyanate as the chief fumigant or as the active pesticidal agent produced from the degradation of other constituents.

Glucosinolate:  Sinalbin (4-OH Benzyl)Primary use for Bio-fumigation Potential:  Elimination of weeds/ seeds
