- SOS® - A Step Forward in Overseeding
Overseeding projects now have the SOS® advantage. With three generations of turf-annuals available, SOS® can be customized to fit your project's specific needs, whether it's budget, on-site requirements, or turf quality expectations.
Perennial ryegrass has been a traditional choice, offering strong turf quality late into the season. However, it often competes with bermudagrass during the spring transition, leading to the need for costly herbicides. Alternative methods aim to reduce perennial ryegrass persistence, but they may compromise the turf's quality.
On the other hand, annual ryegrass is economical and fast to establish but has historically offered poor turf quality. These grasses were often light green, had coarse textures, produced excessive clippings, and lacked traffic tolerance.
Hybrid intermediate ryegrasses were introduced as another solution, but their quality couldn't justify the costs. They also couldn't match the fast establishment and spring transition capabilities of improved turf-annuals. Until the cost of intermediate ryegrasses becomes more competitive and their quality aligns with perennial ryegrasses, they remain an alternative option.
Superior Breeding: The SOS® Difference
Barenbrug USA, in collaboration with Texas A&M, revolutionized the annual ryegrass discussion by introducing Panterra turf-annual and the SOS® Brand of turf-annual ryegrasses in 2006. In 2016, the SOS® Brand expanded to feature four turf-annual ryegrasses across three generations, enhancing turf quality and offering a range of quality, performance, and pricing.
Key Factors Include:
- Traffic tolerance
- Speed of establishment and facility availability
- Speed of transition and spring persistence
- Turf quality (primary or secondary)
Planting Recommendations: SOS® germinates at mid-40s°F soil temperatures, making it suitable for late-season renovation after the playing season. Use the following seeding rates:
Golf: 10-15 lbs per 1,000 sq. feet
Sports Turf: 15 lbs per 1,000 sq. feet
Landscape: 10 lbs per 1,000 sq. feet
